We have prepared an easy step-by-step guide for you. It will help you in installing a pendant light fixture

Select the fixture

The process of installation of a pendant light is much easier than finding the right pendant light fixture. Most of the pendant light fixtures use almost the same basic wiring setup. They can work in any home. You should select the light on the basis of your preferences. There is a huge variety available in the market. You can select the fixture that fits your required size, shape and color scheme.

If you want to add more light to your room, you should select the flare or transparent pendant light and if you only want it as a decoration, then solid shade pendant light will be the best.

There are two basic types of pendant lights. Both of them have their own pros and cons. One is down lighting pendant and the other is up lighting pendant.

Down lighting pendant

These are the common types of pendants that are mostly popular among the house owners. The down lighting pendant fixtures throw the light downwards directly through the hanging light. This type of pendant fixture covers more area with its light. They are very helpful if you want to add some extra lights to your room. You can see more activity in the room even when the natural light is low. They are usually installed in the kitchen for precision in cooking.

Up lighting pendant

The up-lighting pendant light fixtures are not very common among the users. The main reason is that they do not serve the basic purpose of adding extra light to the area. But this doesn’t stop them from being a great option. They can add ambiance to a place. They multiply the beauty of a room.  You can use them in areas where extra lighting is not needed like bedrooms and drawing rooms. They help in creating a very comfortable atmosphere in the room.

Gather the tools and materials

When you have selected the right light fixture, the next step is to install a pendant light. If you are planning to do it by yourself, then it is better that you gather all the necessary stuff before starting. In this way you will not get yourself in any difficulty later on. It is the best practice to double check all the items, whether they are tools or the pieces of the pendant light fixtures.

For installing a pendant, you need a screwdriver, wire cutters, ruler and needle-nosed pliers. You will also need an electrical box. Your box must have the following items

• Mounting brackets

• Wire nuts

• Shade

• Pendant fixture

It would be much better if you keep the instruction manual with you as well. Make sure that none of the pieces of pendant fixture are damaged.

Cut the power and remove the fixtures

When you are working on anything, make sure that you take care of all the safety measures. Safety should be your first concern especially when you are working with any kind of electrical appliances. Cut the power off first and then start working on your project. Any electrical installation should not be performed without this step. When you are installing the pendant fixtures, the source of power is your home’s circuit box. For extra safety, cover the circuit breaker with a tape after turning it off. You can also use a tester to ensure that no power flows to your work area.

If you are replacing an old fixture, then you should remove it at this point. The basic procedure is to twist the old wire connectors in an anticlockwise direction and then disconnect the wires. It will help you remove the entire fixture along with the trim and the base.

Prepare the new fixture

Unpack the new pendant light fixture. Before you start working, check if any of the parts are missing or damaged. Some pendants have adjustable lights. If yours has one too, then use a ruler to measure how long you want it to be. It would be great for you if you perform this step because it will get difficult in the middle of the installation. You can seek help from anyone else in the house by asking them to hold the pendant for you while you measure the required height.

Provide the required support

Now you should start installing the pendant lights, but before that you need to check the support system at the electrical junction box. The building codes never suggest you hang any kind of electrical appliance when the support system is only a dry wall. Make sure when you install a pendant light, it should have a proper support system or a beam that can hold it intact in its place. If you do not have any proper support system, you will immediately need to stop the installation and get the system fixed before installing your pendant light.

Attach all the required items

This is the main step where you will attach the pendant light fixture to your ceiling. This step mostly requires more than one person’s effort. So, you should keep the helping hands with you and all the required tools as well.

The first step is to attach the mounting brackets to the ceiling. You can use your screwdrivers and the screws that came with the pendant light to perform this step. Make sure that your mounting bracket is flush with the ceiling and it looks even. When you attach the bracket, the heads of the screws should be facing towards you.

The next step is to make sure that electricity can get to your light fixture. You should start by attaching the ground wire. We would recommend you to attach the ground wires first so that you can prevent yourself from any lethal shock in case the power is still somehow flowing. All other neutral wires can be easily attached by colour differentiation. Make sure that you check the manufacturer's instructions to avoid any problems. Now twist all the wires together and twist a wire nut in a clockwise direction to secure them in their position.

Light and cover

Attaching the pendant light is much easier than you think. All you need to do is simply line the light up with the screws you had placed in the mounting bracket and throw it into its place you might need to adjust the length of the square root to make it reach the fixture and then attach it to the bracket. The cover should line up against the mounting bracket otherwise it might be insecure and it might damage the wires as well when it is screwed in.

Some of the pendant lights have a shade. So, if yours has one too, then the next and the last step is to attach the shade. The pendant light shade usually has a nut screwed on the mount. Check the box if it does not have one. Unscrew the nut from the mount and slide the shade over the fixture. Secure the shade into its place by re-screwing the screws back into the right place. Some of the pendant lights have shade that can be simply screwed on. If you do not have a shade nut, check the manufacturer's instruction guide before you get worried about it.

Install the bulb

Your pendant light has been installed. Now is the best time to install the light bulb in your light fixture. It is recommended that you use the exact size, type and wattage which your manufacturer recommends. This will prevent you from any fixture shorting or breakage of the bulb. If your fixture is clear, you should use a clear bulb so that the style does not clash.

Installing the light bulb in the pendant light gives you a bit more freedom than the other steps. There are many types of light bulbs available in the market today. All of them have their own benefits and disadvantages. You can have an LED bulb or an OLED bulb or any other traditional type of bulb which suits your taste. There are some types of light bulbs that offer energy saving assets so you can also look out for them. Make sure that you do proper research before deciding what type of bulb you will be using in your pendant lighting.

Turn the power on

All the installation is done and the process is completed. It is now the time to turn the power on. Go to the circuit box of your home and remove the tape. Flip the circuit breaker and return to the room where you have installed the pendant light. If there is no power, make sure that you re-check all the steps and read the instructions. Once the light starts working, install the other adornments that were included. Now you can simply sit back and enjoy your hard work.
